To add a meal contribution for an employee, go to their profile > Pay > Recurring benefit.
Open the benefits sidebar, select Meal. Here you can choose a meal contribution per meal, per day or per month.
Make sure you set the start date to the first day of the period you want to start asking meal contribution for. If you set the start date to half way during the month, it could be that the employee only is asked for meal contributions for part of the month.
The taxable benefit of a meal can't be higher than the maximum allowed by the Dutch government. Which is €4,05 per meal as of 2026.
You can also choose to pay the meal out of your own pocket towards the employee by putting 'Employee contribution' on No.
You can choose to ask for less contribution per meal from an employee by putting the 'Contribution amount' to anything lower than €4,05.
Meal contribution 'per meal'
This option is only available if you use Soigné Scheduling.
When you add a meal contribution per meal, the employee will be asked during clocking out their shifts if they had no meal, 1 meal or 2 meals during work. If they say they had a meal, this meal will be counted towards the contribution. If they say they didn't have a meal, it will not be counted towards their contribution. You can disable asking for 2 meals in the location settings. See more details down below.
The employee selects if they had any meals during their shift.
Meal contribution 'per day'
Meal contribution per day will add 1 meal for every day worked to the payslip of the employee. Regardless of what they register in the app during clock out. With meal contribution per day it's not possible to register 2 meals per day.
Make sure the worked hours of an employee are approved. If they aren't the meals won't be counted.
If you don't work with Soigné Scheduling, make sure to add the days worked of the employee in Pay, that way the per day meal contribution will be calculated.
Meal contribution 'per month'
When you want to give a fixed amount for meal contribution per month, select the 'Per month' measure.
Employee contribution
If you want to make sure given meals are seen as taxable salary for the tax office, but don't want to ask employees for contribution, make sure you turn 'employee contribution' off. This way meals are still counted towards the total salary for an employee, so Belastingdienst can't see it as disguised wages (verkapt loon), but the net payout of the employee will not be influenced. They won't pay 4,05 per meal themselves.
1 or 2 meals per shift
In Settings > pick a location > Hours and Clocking, you can select if an employee can pick 1 or 2 meals when clocking out.
Frequently asked questions
I can't select if I had a meal when clocking out anymore. I used to be able to do this.
It's possible that this employee has an meal contribution 'per day' instead of 'per meal'. In an earlier version of Soigné the app would ask every employee if they had a meal when clocking out, even when the system didn't do anything with that information.
So if an employee had a 'per day' meal contribution, the system would still ask if they had 0, 1 or 2 meals, but then ignored that information and just applied 1 meal for 1 day worked. Which wasn't correct.
This has been updated to the correct logic, where an employee only gets asked if they had a meal during clock-out when they have the 'per meal' meal contribution.
