My employee is pregnant / getting a baby, how do I register their leave?

This articles explains the different types of leave around getting a baby as a mom and as a dad. It also explains the 'WAZO-uitkering' process from the UWV, where an employee can get money directly or you pay it to them and get the money from UWV.

You, your wife or one of your employees is getting a baby, congratulations! According to Dutch law the person getting the baby and the partner have the right to multiple types of leave.

The types of leave (WAZO-uitkeringen) you or your partner can get from UWV.

Types of leave

The different types of leave you can get as a mother, partner or parent.

Mother

Pregnancy leave

  • Zwangerschapsverlof in Dutch

  • 100% paid by UWV

  • 4-6 weeks, the mother can pick, as long as the total of pregnancy leave and maternity leave combined is max 16 weeks. Unless you get twins, then it's 8-10 weeks.

Maternity leave

  • Bevallingsverlof in Dutch

  • 100% paid by UWV

  • 10-12 weeks, the mother can pick, as long as the total of pregnancy leave and maternity leave combined is max 16 weeks. Unless your child gets hospitalised, then you get 10 weeks extra.

Partner

Emergency leave

  • Calamiteitenverlof in Dutch

  • 100% paid by employer

  • 1 day, on the day of birth

Birth leave

  • Geboorteverlof in Dutch

  • 100% paid by employer

  • 1 week, has to be taken within 4 weeks of birth of child.

  • Doesn't have to be taken in one go, you can split up the week by taking some days per week (for example you take a free day on every Friday)

Additional birth leave

  • Calamiteitenverlof in Dutch

  • 70% paid by employer

  • 5 weeks, has to be taken within 6 months of birth of child.

  • Doesn't have to be taken in one go, you can split up the 5 weeks by taking some days per week (for example you take a free day on every Friday)

Parents

Parental leave

  • Ouderschapsverlof in Dutch

  • 70% paid by UWV

  • 9 weeks, has to be taken within 1 year of birth of child

  • Doesn't have to be taken in one go, you can split up the 9 weeks by taking some days per week (for example you take a free day on every Friday)

Unpaid parental leave

  • Onbetaald ouderschapsverlof in Dutch

  • Unpaid, but you have the right to take the free days

  • 17 weeks, no deadline

  • Doesn't have to be taken in one go, you can split up the 17 weeks by taking some days per week (for example you take a free day on every Friday)

Adoption and foster care leave (100% UWV)

  • Adoptie- en pleegzorgverlof in Dutch

  • 100% paid by UWV

  • 6 weeks, taken from 6 weeks before the child comes until 22 weeks after the child is there.

How to register birth leave types in Soigné

Go to the profile of the employee > 'Absence' section > + > 'Add special leave'

Pick on of the birth leave types for mother, partner or parents. Emergency leave falls under the 'Wellbeing' category.

Select if you want to add a total number of hours of leave in one month (e.g. 38 hours of birth leave in May) or select if you want to add weekly recurring hours over multiple months (e.g. 8 hours every week)

Select the period where you want to add the hours to. Fill out the total number of hours.

Decide if the employee should receive any money from UWV directly or that you receive it and pay it out to them.

Don't forget to register the leave in the 'werkgeversportaal' of UWV as well, otherwise the employee won't get their money. You can contact UWV if you have questions around that process.

You've selected 'Add weekly recurring hours over multiple months'

Select a start date, duration (indefinite or with a set end date), the hours per week you want to register the leave for. Finally decide if the employee should receive any money from UWV directly or that you receive it and pay it out to them.
