How do wait days (wachtdagen) work?

When an employee gets sick you don't have to pay them for the first day of sickness. This is called a wait day (wachtdag in Dutch). This articles explains how to apply them, correct them and what it does to the payslip of an employee.

🤒 Wait day rules

You are only allowed to apply a wait day every 28 days. So if an employee becomes sick two times within 28 days, you are not allowed to apply a second wait day for that second sickness.

When an employee becomes sick, gets better, and becomes sick again more than 28 days later, you are allowed to apply a new wait day.

You are not allowed to apply a wait day for the same sickness more than once, even when this person is sick for multiple months. You can read more about wait day in the Dutch Horeca cao.

How to add a wait day

To add a wait day, turn on 'Apply wait day' when you add a sickness to an employee profile of someone with a fixed contract. If they have a lot of overtime hours saved up, you could consider lowering the risk of having to pay that out when they leave by compensating the wait day with their overtime balance.

How to remove a wait day

You can remove a wait day by editing an existing sickness and putting 'Apply wait day' to No.

How to adjust a wait day on an old payslip

Is you want to remove or add a wait day to a payslip, go to the profile of an employee, edit their sickness in the period you want to add or remove the wait day, there you can turn on/off the wait day that has been previously applied. A correction payslip will show up in Pay automatically.

If the correction is a negative amount, meaning you need to get money back from the employee, we recommend to wait with batching it and batch it in the upcoming month, where you'll find a regular payslip for that employee. This way the negative amount will be deducted from their next salary and you don't have to beg them to get your money back.

Frequently asked questions

Why did I get less salary this month as a fixed hours contract employee that has been sick?

When you've been sick this month, your employer could have applied a wait day. In that case you didn't get paid for your first day of sickness. You can check this on your PDF payslip. Which you'll find in the Soigné app under Payouts > select a month > scroll down and press 'Download PDF payslip'.

I see a correction payslip for an employee that has been sick, what is that?

If you applied a wait day to an employee, then paid them, then remove the wait day, the employee is entitled to the pay you've withheld in the first place. So a correction payslip for that month will appear with the remaining salary you have to pay.

The other way around, when you've paid an employee and then add a sickness with wait day for that period, the employee needs to pay you back a part of their salary. In that case a negative correction payslip for that period appears.

If the correction is a negative amount, meaning you need to get money back from the employee, we recommend to wait with batching it and batch it in the upcoming month, where you'll find a regular payslip for that employee. This way the negative amount will be deducted from their next salary and you don't have to beg them to get your money back.
